Sioux Falls gets an update on proposed events center

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Mike Huether gave an update on the proposed Sioux Falls events center Monday.

The update meeting included some scheduling changes.  One of those involves the firms vying to consult on the project.  Public Works Director Mark Cotter says the city will conduct interviews with the firms later than planned on January 19th saying they hope to, "make our selection by the end of that week."

The city is meeting with three of the five groups that made proposals. the first is Hunt Construction Group of out Indianapolis.  it's working with Sioux Falls-based Fiegan Construction.  The second is Mortenson Construction out of Minneapolis.  The third is another joint venture between Sioux Falls Construction and Henry Carlson, also based in Sioux Falls.

City leaders say they're taking their time with these decisions.  Cotter says they've even pushed back setting up contracts with design team Sink, Combs and Dethlefs; and architectural firm Koch Hazard until this Friday, " At that point that will set forth the contract and we'll initially focus on phase one, which is the comparative analysis of a convention center site and then a downtown site."

A decision the Build it Downtown Committee is anticipating.  "We're still reviewing information, we're watching this closely, we're glad that downtown is still in the mix moving forward," says executive committee member Brendan Reilly.

Mayor Huether says it's just another step in the process to make the best decision for Sioux Falls, saying, "we need to protect the best interests of our city, you know, when we're going to invest 100 million dollars, one mistake could cost the city millions."

The next update meeting is scheduled for February 14th.
