Scholar of the Week: Ramona senior one of six

Posted: Updated:

Austin Jensen enjoys farming, plays sports and goes out of his way to attend a tiny high school in Lake County.

At a time when many might avoid the field of education, our Scholar of the Week wants to take it on as a district leader.

Business law, Spanish. government, chemistry, English and calculus.

"It's a lot of homework every night," says Austin, who will get where he wants to go, which is Northern State University.

"After I graduate I wanna go to NSU, go into history education and then get a masters and be a superintendent or principal," says Austin.

He says he wants to work in a smaller school - like the one he's attended - Oldham Ramona school in Ramona, South Dakota.

"I've always liked small schools - it's a big family as opposed to big schools. There's not as close of relationships to each other."

Austin transferred to Oldham Ramona from Arlington and says the 18 mile commute one way is worth it.

"Everyone knows everything that's going on with each other."

In his time outside of school Austin teaches Sunday school and works on his family's farm.

"When I was 11 I bought my own herd of cows so I stay busy raising those."

His busy schedule provides a good example of what his fellow students can achieve.

"He works well with people and is a good role model," says athletic director Judy Voeltz.

Sioux Valley Energy is sending Austin a hundred dollar scholarship for being our Scholar of the Week.

That's a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
