Scholar of the Week: Senior headed to Stanford

Posted: Updated:

The opportunities given to West Central High School senior Sean McCluskey are taking him to the big leagues of education.

But first our Scholar of the Week will graduate with his 112 classmates.

Sean McCluskey gets an early start on the day - he's usually at school by 7:30 everyday for rehearsal - whether it's choir, jazz band or his improvisational group.

The West Central senior is headed to an Ivy League school this fall.

"I'm going to Stanford for chemical engineering or math," says Sean, who's been to Stanford University before for summer camps and says he's not worried about going to a school far away from home.

"I fell in love with the campus - just the environment."

In fact Sean will audition for several acapella groups at Stanford in September.

Back here at home he works a part time job at a bowling alley and lives on a farm.

"Very well rounded, he's got a lot of great potential for his future," says his teacher.

Once in college - it's likely our Scholar of the Week will stay in that college environment.

"Eventually I'd wanna go into education at the collegiate level - that sounds fun to me," says Sean.

His teacher says, "He has to take initiative, he's got a lot of drive and always shown that."

Local Touchstone Energy Cooperative Sioux Valley Energy is sending Sean a hundred dollar scholarship for being our Scholar of the Week.
