Cabin destroyed at flooded Lake Poinsett in SD

Posted: Updated:

Hamlin County Emergency Manager Dave Schaefer says the conditions on flooded Lake Poinsett in eastern South Dakota are "horrible."

Schaefer says a cabin was destroyed Thursday by large ice chunks driven by strong winds. Other cabins have been damaged, and some docks destroyed.

The lake is at its highest level in history, at more than 6 feet above full.

Schaefer says four people had to be rescued Wednesday night when their car was swept off a water-covered stretch of U.S. Highway 81 near the lake. The highway was closed but Schaefer says the driver ignored the signs.

Other highways that are closed due to flooding are S.D. 22 east of Hazel, S.D. 21 at Lake Marsh and S.D. 42 from U.S. 281 to the Davison County line.
