Genola Hegge enjoys PiYo class at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center.
PiYo is a hybrid workout that combines pilates and yoga. Nancy Naeve Brown shows us, it's packing in the people at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center who want to build strength & gain flexibility.
PiYo blends the benefits of two extremely popular disciplines; Pilates and yoga. Avera McKennan Fitness Certified PiYo Instructor Denise Nelson says the two merge so easily because they both work your core.
Nelson says, "It's the most amazing workout you'll ever have because you are working every single muscle, joint and ligament in your body. Instead of just one range of motion, you have a complete range of motion. Therefore in your daily life when you move, the movements are way easier for you. You've already conditioned your body."
The Avera McKennan Fitness Center added this hybrid class to its program roster in March, but had to add more classes because of its popularity. The Mind/Body Studio is usually stock full for the class. Genola Hegge says PiYo is a little faster paced, a little more intense and she sweats a little more, but she likes the variety.
Avera McKennan Fitness Member Genola Hegge says, "I've done Pilates for several years, I've done yoga for several years so it seems normal to incorporate the two of them. And it's like killing 2 birds with one stone because I'm taking care of 2 things at the same time."
Instructor Nelson says the class is like checking off a big to-do list. You feel great when you are done and although you are working your entire body when you're here, you leave feeling totally relaxed and ready for whatever the day has to offer. No wonder PiYo is such a popular pick for fitness.
