Mayor recommends building events center at Arena site

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Mike Huether recommended building a new events center at the current Arena/Convention Center site on Monday.

The Mayor says the site is the most fiscally responsible, is the best business decision, makes the most common sense, is what the experts recommend, and is where the pulse of our city is.

He says the arena will have stronger earnings every year -- $3.2 million higher.

Spending will be greater -- about $16.5 million more will be spent and there will be a greater job impact.

He also says he wants to take advantage of the investments the city has already made -- like the Convention Center and Arena.

And he says it just makes sense to put an events center at that site.

If you remember last week the architectural and engineering firms made their recommendations and they also said the arena location is best.

So Mayor Huether is agreeing with those findings but says he knows some people might be disappointed.

"This events center topic is one in which of all us and every citizen of this town will not agree on in it's entirety...but I do believe is we should come together as a team and come together as a community," Huether said.

Huether says he wants to build this and wants to move forward -- because the cost has doubled over the past 6 years.
