Avera Race Against Breast Cancer brings out thousands

Posted: Updated:

On this beautiful Saturday runners took their mark for Avera's Race Against Breast Cancer.

If you weren't one of the 6,200 people running the race this year, you might have been on the sidelines cheering runners on.

The race brings together family, friends and cancer survivors all racing toward the same goal to help enhance cancer care for people here in Sioux Falls and in the surrounding communities.

Many of us at KSFY ran the race this year. Katie Taube was one of them.

She talked to a volunteer who says this is an inspirational day.

It's a great day out here for the Avera Race Against Breast Cancer. I ran the race this year and it was cloudy and cold, but today we have sunny skies and warm temperatures. I know a lot of our team members made their goal including Alex Ronallo who you will hear from tonight at 10.

One of the things people notice is the number of volunteers. There are a lot of runners but there are lot of people who take time early on a Saturday to come out here to volunteer and make the course save. A volunteer who talked to me is Dawn Szymik.

"I got here at four. Everyone was here by 5 setting up signs for the 5k and 10k races. We are pitching in by being part of this inspiring day. I nominated myself to be on the finish line cheering people as they came in. There's so many of us and it means the world to us to help out and be here. I choose not to run but to be out here and volunteering. It is the most rewarding thing for me," Szymik said.

Thanks for joining us Dawn. It's just a great day for the Avera Race Against Breast Cancer. If you missed it this year, there is always next year.
