Sioux Falls City Council may vote on Events Center location

Posted: Updated:

The Sioux Falls City Council will meet next week to see if they can set a date on voting on a location for a proposed Sioux Falls Events Center.

At Monday's Informational Meeting, the Mayor and Public Works Director Mark Cotter talked about what the architectural and engineering firms are doing now.

This process is all in phases -- phase one was the site analysis -- you might remember that was looking at the downtown location versus the Arena/Convention Center location -- now that that's done...they are moving on to phase two.

That has to do with developing the schematic design.

The firms are coming up with basic building drawings as well as looking at seating and operations.

Looking at ticketing, restrooms -- those are what they're calling public services and other areas -- locker rooms and suite areas.

The Mayor also mentioned again why he's recommending the Arena location. He says it just makes sense and he know some people don't agree with him.

Here's what he had to say.

"As we went through this journey the events center topic is one all of us will not agree with in its entirety," said Mayor Huether.

Mark Cotter said they are looking at parking alternatives out at the Arena location.

If you remember the arch and engineering firms suggested taking out 5 fields to put down a surface lot. Many people in town don't want that to happen.

So Cotter said they are looking at alternatives and they are talking with the Softball Association and the McCart family -- but that's all they are saying.
