Southwest district discusses proposed events center

Posted: Updated:

"I want to participate in the government of my own city," Bob Wiens said.

Bob Wiens lives in southwest Sioux Falls, the same district where city council member Greg Jamison hosted a meeting to discuss a proposed events center.

"I'm absolutely open to building an events center but we need to see some firm financial figures that aren't going to be extraordinarily escalated later on and make sure that those things are all in place," Wiens said.

A new events center is something Bob has been interested in for a long time. By a show of hands tonight, many residents agreed. But some had their disagreements, questioning if it's really a good time to build. Two of the hottest topics on the table tonight: funding and location.

"In a way we're relieving some of the concerns and in a way we're just opening up the concerns to the voting public so that we can have some knowledge to what is going to happen here," Wiens said.

Regardless of what happens with an events center, Bob says that's not his biggest worry.

"I'm not saying one issue is more important than the other but right now it is so obvious that we have to get some work done on the streets in town all over the city," Wiens said.

That concern was one of the first that we heard. Jamison says he came in without knowing what to expect but is glad this gave residents a chance to speak.

"I wasn't prepared to be engaged. Everyone had good comments and thoughts. I didn't know if I had to carry the whole night. But they carried it and fed me a lot of new information that I probably thought was out there and they made it crystal clear now what their concerns are," Jamison said.

Jamison says he looks forward to planning more of these meetings down the road.
