Newly revised plan to save McCart Fields

Posted: Updated:

The city's original plan was to replace five of McCart's eleven ball diamonds with parking lots. New revisions result in only replacing one. City leaders say they're pleased with this new plan.

"It ultimately creates closer parking for users of this entire campus. Whether it's for a new events center in Sioux Falls but for the convention, arena, ballparks and Howard Wood," Public Works Director Mark Cotter said.

Denny Lower wasn't so pleased when he found out the city was considering replacing any of the fields. Today, he is a little more relieved that some revisions were made.

"We're not thrilled about losing any diamonds but losing one diamond would beat losing five," Lower said.

Denny says he's been around these fields for twenty years and lives for each game. He always puts safety first.

"We would still be able to play our games and make adjustments and it would also allow us some parking and the safety for our kids and parents coming to games," Lower said.

Also somewhat pleased are the daughters of Earl McCart. In a letter to the city leaders regarding these new plans, they say:

"It is in this context that we support the use of one diamond to provide additional parking for the Earl McCart fields and for the proposed events center."

Denny is happy with the area and hopes people continue to play on these fields for many years to come.
