The Redigers have been married almost 63 years. The strength of their marriage will serve them well now that the high waters in Pierre have forced them out of their home and into a small hotel room for now.
Thousands of people in Pierre and Fort Pierre will likely spend months out of their homes waiting for the water to come back down. While many people are staying with friends and family others are now calling hotel rooms home.
Velda Rediger and her husband Cliff admit it hasn't been easy to move out of their home at the Parkwood Apartments. Almost two weeks ago the rising river forced them out of their apartment and into a room at the Super 8 Hotel. The Redigers say they had two days notice to pack up their things and move into the hotel.
Velda says the hotel has taken some getting used to. "If you're not used to small spaces this is a small area to be," Velda said.
However Velda says she's been pleasantly surprised by all the convinces the hotel has to offer. She's been able to do laundry and she even cooks in the room from time to time on a small cooker she brought a long. The Redigers will also tell you they are big fans of the breakfast served at the hotel especially the biscuits and gravy.
The Redigers live on the 3rd floor of their apartment building. So far the water is staying a good ways away from their home. If it stays that way they say they will be moving back as soon as they are given the all clear.
