'Build it Downtown' leader reacts to location decision
After last night's city council meeting went well into the night, 'Build it Downtown' leader Steve Hildebrand says the final count was no surprise.
"We expected going into it that it was going to be a 4-4 vote with the Mayor breaking the tie," Steve Hildebrand said.
The Mayor's tie-breaker eventually led to the arena convention center location for a new proposed events center.
"What I expected from the beginning was Mayor Huether would have the ability to persuade the city council to give him a unanimous vote and he failed to do that," Hildebrand said.
Their fight doesn't stop here.
"We named our group "Build it Downtown" for a reason. We weren't just for the events center being downtown. We'd like to see a convention center and ballpark eventually downtown," he said. "We believe firmly that a vibrant downtown is best for all of Sioux Falls. That an inner city core really makes the whole city vibrant."
And he'll continue to push for years down the road.
"In the next five years, we want to see the events center built downtown. We're not about to give up on that. Just because the city council made a decision where they believe it should be located, doesn't mean the debate is over. It's far from over in my opinion," Hildebrand said.
