Not all kids lounge around during their summer break from school. Nancy Naeve Brown went to the Avera Sports Institute in Sioux Falls to see how a lot of high schoolers are having a ball working on their ball skills through the TIBBS program.
This fall Laura Hurley will enter her senior year at Sioux Falls Christian High School, but she wanted to spend her 8 weeks of her summer getting ready for her last basketball season as a charger.
Laura says, "Last year we had a disappointing loss in the first round of districts. We had a great season but the post-season wasn't so great so we are hoping to have another great season and then continue into districts and regions and hopefully state."
Laura and her teammates, and kids from all over the region, have enrolled in the TIBBS program at the Avera Sports Institute. It's a comprehensive basketball training program that offers everything from individual workouts to group camps. TIBBS stands for Tibbetts Instructional Basketball School Program. Nate Tibbetts started it 8 years ago, his business partner Matt Wilbur runs it now.
Matt says, "We work on what they need to work on so we have asses them. Does their shot need to change? Does their ball handling need to do change? It's a high energy workout when we push them but our instructors have to give their stuff that will make them better in an hour and give them things they can work on outside of here. That's what makes them better."
Wilbur grew up in dells and played ball for Augie. All the coaches in the program either played college basketball or have coached basketball. Everyone in the gym is here for the love of the game and the drive to be better.
Laura says, "It puts into practice at game speed, game situations and they really push you for an hour and they're always energetic, encouraging you to go faster and faster and faster and mistakes are encouraged."
Matt Wilbur says, "The fun part is to see kids get better. I'm, a lot of us are South Dakota guys so it's awesome to see kids that are competing on the SD level coming through here and getting better and we can see the improvement and that's pretty cool for us."
The coaches bring their "A" game to every single workout because they know it will bring out the best on the hardwood from them come winter.
There are TIBBS sessions offered all year long, on all different levels.
