Living in the Midwest it's easy to understand why some people leave home without locking their door.
However not doing so could put your home at risk, and that's a risk Tim Staples isn't willing to take.
"Anytime we leave the house we make sure the doors are locked and with the garage door opener we really don't have to worry about them prying it open." Said Staples.
But others in the city haven't been as safety conscious as Staples.
Over the summer police have seen garage after garage fall victim to quick thieves.
"Most of the time it's a crime of opportunity, people are walking along looking for an open garage and help themselves." Said Officer Sam Clemens.
Sioux Falls Police say there have been times where thieves have also been bold enough to walk right into peoples homes.
So any door that can be locked should be.
Staples even put a security bar on the patio door, just one extra security step.
While he hasn't seen much activity in his neighborhood he knows it can happen anywhere.
"The thing that bothers me is the newer neighborhoods like Southwest and Northwest of town; some of those are getting hit and that's brand new construction." Said Staples.
The police say there is no target neighborhood and the thefts have occurred all over the city.
So the best advice is just don't let your guard down because unfortunately, there are people out there just waiting for the right opportunity.
"It's an easy thing to do, to lock your doors, we've stressed it time and time again." Said Officer Clemens.
Officer Clemens also says that thieves will take anything of value and recently motorcycle helmets and even golf clubs have been among the things stolen.
So keeping these things of value out of plain sight could also deter a quick theft.
