A police officer has died and two officers are seriously wounded after a shootout with a man in Rapid City, S.D.
Police Chief Steve Allender says the officers approached four people Tuesday afternoon at an intersection whose behavior was "suspicious." One man pulled a gun and fired several shots. Allender says 28-year-old Officer James Ryan McCandless was pronounced dead at a local hospital, and 27-year-old Officer Nick Armstrong is in critical condition. The third officer is listed as stable. His name hasn't been released.
Allender says at least one officer returned fire and hit the suspect, who was undergoing surgery. His name hasn't been released.
It was Rapid City's first fatal shooting of a police officer since 1985. The western South Dakota city is home to about 63,000 people.
