South Dakota prep football is a bit turbulent in 2011.

After three weeks, three different 11AA teams have been ranked #1 and a number of other ranked teams have tested the unfriendly upset bug. With its 3-0 start, Sioux Falls Roosevelt has ascended to the top billing in the class. Projected #4 in the early season rankings (and fourth best among the Sioux Falls schools), Kim Nelson's Roosevelt team has been the best in 11AA.

In the other classes, defending champion Dell Rapids is fighting through some injuries (specifically junior all-state linebacker/running back Cole Langer) but look fast and the best in 11A, although watch out for #2 Harrisburg. In 11B, #1 Tri-Valley and #2 Winner have opened the season with strong performances and may be the best in the class. Keep your eye on defending champion #4 Flandreau with its all-everything player Joe Parsley. In 9-AA, #1 Bridgewater/Emery/Ethan appears again to be the top team although #2 Clark/Willow Lake has made the transition from 11-man to 9-man and looks dangerous. Pay close attention to Leola/Frederick in 9AA. Canistota is unbeaten and look to be the best in 9A. Head coach Tom Culver's Avon Pirates have rolled to a 3-0 record and survived a test with 9A Hanson. They will be tough to knock off the 9B perch.

After three weeks we have watched some traditional powers take a hit but they will be back. Game on.

Three South Dakota teams have 14-game winning streaks in South Dakota including Dell Rapids (2-0) in 11A, Flandreau (3-0) in 11B, and Canistota (2-0) in 9A. All three teams are defending champions. Flandreau owns a 24-3 record over its previous 27 games and its last defeat was to Tri-Valley in September of 2010. Dell Rapids last loss dates to October 27, 2009 in a 35-6 setback to Milbank.

Heading into week four, a total of 40 teams remain unbeaten, including 16 in 11-man and 24 in 9-man. In 11AA, the unbeatens include Mitchell, Roosevelt and Yankton. In 11A, the teams include Dell Rapids, Milbank, Dakota Valley, Harrisburg, Little Wound, Todd County and Belle Fourche. In 11B, there are six including Groton Area, Tri Valley, Flandreau, Wagner, Winner and Custer. In 9AA, five teams are unbeaten including Clark/Willow Lake, Leola/Frederick, Deubrook Area, Great Plains Lutheran, and Andes Central. In 9A, 10 teams are left without a loss including Canistota, Eureka/Bowdle, Herreid/Selby, Wilmot, Colman/Egan, Corsica/Stickney, Wolsey-Wessington, Irene/Wakonda, Wall and Faith. In 9B, nine are without a loss led by Avon, Waverly/South Shore, Castlewood, Viborg/Hurley, Plankinton, Sully Buttes, Langford, Jones County and Harding County.

It is nice to see Huron playing solid football. Huron (1-2) ended a 16-game losing streak with a 17-12 win over Pierre Riggs. The Tigers, directed by head coach Mike Postma, could be 2-1 but lost a tough season-opener to Brookings, 20-17.

This past week, there were a number of outstanding performances including that of  Kimball/White Lake's Jacob Kirsch, who rushed for 304 yards. Brent Zemlicka of Waverly/South Shore had 263 yards rushing and three TDs while Casey Goodhart of Sisseton had 247 yards rushing and two TDs, including an 80-yard run.

Quarterback play has also been outstanding. Lincoln's Alex Schultz continues to shine, even in defeat. In a loss this week to Roosevelt, he threw for 365 yards. This year he has completed 65-of-107 passes for 1,009 yards and thrown 13 TDs. He has had four or more TDs three straight games. In addition, Schultz has had at least 250 yards passing three consecutive games, including two straight games of at least 350 yards passing (355, 393). Carver Ching of Castlewood has led his teams to a pair of victories by throwing 11 TDs in two games. Milbank's Nick Mears, who has 10 combined TDs, has already accumulated 414 rushing yards and 395 passing yards and is on his way to another 1,000 yards double (rushing and receiving). It is rare that an athlete does that unique double. In a 24-7 defeat of Aberdeen Roncalli, Mears had a rare double with  229 yards rushing and 234 yards passing. Pay attention to Mears, who also has two TD runs of 90 or more yards (90, 94) - unreal.

Coaching Milestones

With a 13-7 OT win over Tea at the DakotaDome, Vermillion head coach Gary Culver picked up his 199th career win (199-143). Culver can get win 200 when the Tanagers travel to Canton on Sept. 26.

Team to Watch
