Scholar of the Week: Scholar Excels Despite Grade Scale

Posted: Updated:

Time to meet another Scholar of the Week.

This one is our first gentleman of the school year.

Tyler Koupal works his tail off in the classroom.

His school has a tougher grading scale than most - but it isn't stopping him from making the grade - as well as some baskets.

"Me and my family play ping-pong a lot."

Just one of the ways Tyler Koupal spends his time when he's not busy with school and activities.

He also has a new dog - a morkie - and spent time this summer sandbagging for family friends who live in Dakota Dunes.

Teachers say that hard work carries into the classroom.

"He works hard, someone doesn't have to go do it for him," says math teacher Cole Knippling.

Tyler's taking stats, physics, honors English and college math.

He's also a tutor for younger students.

His goal is to be a dentist, which will mean lots of college.

Tyler says, "U of M would be my favorite, maybe Lincoln and maybe USD."

Tyler also played football and golf - but says basketball is his favorite.

His time on the court hasn't been easy as he's dealt with a couple of injuries that would have sidelined most players.

"In high school he's had injuries but when he got hurt, he got back with a great attitude on the bench as well as in the game," says Knippling.

As our Scholar of the Week Tyler's getting a hundred dollar scholarship from the City of Elk Point, a Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
