Gridiron Blitz #5

By Dan Genzler, KSFY Pigskin Preview Blogger By Dan Genzler, KSFY Pigskin Preview Blogger

As the air turns a little crisper this fall, so does the play on the gridirons across the plains. South Dakota prep action has been explosive this year, including White River's 82 point performance and Corsica/Stickney's 70 points, among others. On the other hand, we have witnessed defenses like Winner which has not allowed a point to a South Dakota opponent this year.

It has been a season that has included upsets and "down to the wire" finishes on a regular basis. We have also witnessed the continuing excellence of teams like Dell Rapids in 11A and Canistota in 9A which continue to hum along. Both have 15-game winning streaks, which is the best in South Dakota. With the 11AA class knocking each other off week by week and constant movement in the rankings of several other classes, the rest of the season promises to provide many thrills and adrenaline rushes from the play on the field and not the chill in the air.

Big Matchups This Week

As the season begins its fifth week, two teams, Dell Rapids in 11A and Canistota in 9A, carry 15-game winning streaks. Last Friday, Tri-Valley, the top team in 11B, knocked off #4 Flandreau (3-1), 29-13, to end the Fliers 14-game winning streak that dated back to a 7-3 loss to Tri-Valley a year ago. Now, the Mustangs get a shot at 11A #1 Dell Rapids, which owns a 15-game winning streak dating to a October 27, 2009 35-6 setback to Milbank. The Quarriers will have home field in this key matchup. Can Tri-Valley once again (Flandreau last week) be the winning streak slayer?

Week five has several other big games this week including 9AA #1 Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan hosting 9A #3 Hanson (2-2). The Beavers will face its third opponent ranked #1 in one of the 9-man classes after losing to 9B #1 Avon (32-28) and 9A #1 Canistota (48-0). 9AA #4 Deubrook Area (3-0) plays at 9B #3 Castlewood (3-0). 11A #2 West Central (3-1) will welcome 11A #4 Harrisburg (3-1) to Hartford. 9AA #2 Clark-Willow Lake (3-0) will host 9B #4 Waverly/South Shore (3-0). In addition 11AA Yankton (4-0) and Brookings (3-1) in a crucial ESD battle on homecoming at Crane-Youngworth Field in the river city. Then, we will see two top quarterbacks do battle – Lincoln's Alex Schultz and Brandon Valley's Chase Marso in a key matchup at Howard Wood Field.

31 Teams Remain Unbeaten

A total of 31 teams remain unbeaten, including 12 in 11-man and 19 in 9-man. In 11AA, two teams remain unbeaten, including top ranked Roosevelt and fifth-ranked Yankton. In 11A, five teams remain unbeaten including #1 Dell Rapids, #3 Dakota Valley, Little Wound, Todd County and Belle Fourche. In 11B, there are five teams without a loss including #1 Tri-Valley, #2 Winner, #4 Groton Area, Wagner, and Custer. In 9AA, four teams are unbeaten including #2 Clark/Willow Lake, #3 Leola/Frederick, #4 Deubrook Area, and #5 Great Plains Lutheran. In 9A, seven teams are left without a loss including #1 Canistota, #2 Corsica/Stickney, #3 Irene/Wakonda, #5 Colman/Egan, Herreid/Selby, Wall and Faith. In 9B, eight are unbeaten including #1 Avon, #2 Viborg/Hurley, #3 Castlewood, #4 Waverly/South Shore, #5 Sully Buttes, as well as Harding County, Langford, and Jones County.
