In South Dakota prep football this season, offensive storms have brewed on the gridiron during a fall, which has mostly been mostly calm and occasionally a little brisk. While the winds of the Plains have howled at times, prep football teams' constant race to the end zone, whether by offense or defense, has created a strong breeze. Many teams appear already to be in playoff form.

Through five weeks of the season, a total of 143 teams have scored 40 or more points in a game. Of that group, 81 teams have scored between 40-49 points; 43 have totaled 50-59 points; 16 have point totals between 60-69; two teams have scored over 70 and one over 80. Sixty-two teams have surpassed 50 points and 19 have reached 60 or more. White River has the season-high in points with 82 while Faith and Corsica/Stickney both have scored 70. Four teams have put up 68 points in a single game. On the other (dark) side, 92 teams have been shutout.

Canistota Keeps Rolling

The Canistota Hawks, led by head coach Lenny Schroeder, own the longest winning streak in South Dakota prep football at 16 games. They face a challenge this week when 9B #2 Viborg/Hurley (4-0) welcomes the Hawks to town on Friday. After cruising to the 9B title a year ago, the Hawks moved up to 9A. In four wins this season, Canistota has outscored opponents, 180-26, with three shutouts in earning the #1 ranking. During its 12-0 season of a year ago, they outscored opponents, 627-38, including 230-8 in the playoffs. In the past 16 games, they have recorded 10 shutouts and scored more than 50 points 10 times. In those 16 games, they own an 807 to 64 scoring advantage. In that span, 9AA #1 Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan is the only team to stay within eight points of Canistota, which has recorded shutouts in eight of its last 11 games. Canistota's last loss occurred they were Canistota/Bridgewater in 2009. During a 7-3 season, Canistota/Bridgewater fell to Emery/Ethan (now Bridgewater/Emery/Ethan), 28-6, in the playoffs (Nov. 2). This season Canistota is averaging 45.0 points per game with a rushing game producing 276.3 yards and a passing game adding 97.8 or 374.11 total yards per game. One indication of their dominance is that they had only punted a grand total of eight times in the four games. This team has defeated the #1 9AA team Bridgewater/Emery/Ethan, preseason ranked Howard, 9A #2 Hanson and outscored its last two opponents, 98-0.
