Too much lost opportunity for A-list names at the arena

Posted: Updated:

When we met with Terry Torkildson, he said the number of seats is the biggest factor when it comes to booking deals at the arena.  As of now, he says, booking bigger events is a lost cause.

"We're not getting shows now because 1, the size, two, they don't fit and three, the dates. With having two arenas in town, we'll be able to rectify all three of those," Terry Torkildson said.

But before contracts happen, Terry said it's a long process of working out a deal that all comes down to the money. Take a recent situation for example: a big artist was looking at South Dakota: Rapid City vs. Sioux Falls.

"Gave him the demographics, the good material I could, we have universities nearby. He said 'We're sold, how many seats can we do?' I told them and they said 'oh, I'll get back to you'... Rapid City can do more seats," Torkildson said.

He says it's a continuous effort to get the big names here but a lot of that effort goes toward the big-name promoters.

"They're the ones you want to constantly remind you're here. As soon as the vote passes, I'll be making phone calls," Torkildson said.

SMG knows a new events center with 12,000 seats, and the potential to expand, will change all of that. Terry says the sky's the limit.

"You get into that 80 dollar ticket range, you're getting pretty high gross potential so you're opening a whole new segment of entertainment that hasn't been available," Torkildson said.
