Scholar of the Week: Avon senior loves chemistry

Posted: Updated:

Today's Scholar of the Week comes from a large family known for doing well in school.

Clearly Luke VanGerpen is no different.

This future engineer is turning to his favorite subjects for a future career.

Luke VanGerpen uses his two study halls to his advantage.

And he needs to - with classes like English, advanced math, chemistry and government on his class schedule at Avon High School.

He also is busy after school.

Sometimes it's football.

"There's basketball in the winter, then track, F.C.A., student council meetings once every two weeks," says Luke.

Luke is looking to attend either SDSU or the School of Mines.

With his love for math and chemistry - it's no wonder he's choosing electrical engineering as his future career field.

"Luke is a helper, he tries new techniques and take interest in areas we talk about," says his chemistry teacher Paul Kuhlman.

Luke says, "I've been looking and there are some openings, to help me get out of a small town."

With five sisters and three brothers - Luke takes advantage of any quiet time he can get.

"I like playing XBOX or I can go to the gym when I want."

Bonhomme-Yankton Electric Association is sending Luke a hundred dollar scholarship for being today's Scholar of the Week.
