Yes, football and volleyball are done and basketball is back. With a bit of chill in the air, action moves inside to gyms and arenas across the region. It will be cold outside but warm inside as shots are launched from all over.

This prep basketball blog will try and provide information on some of the key games and performances early in the season. Please send emails to dangenzler@gmail.com about top performances, stats or accomplishments this prep season. The blog will try and include historical info, key matchups, and noteworthy efforts this season, leading to the state tourneys later in the spring.

Malloy's 31 Top Performance on Opening Night
While, we can't capture all of the outstanding performances on opening night, here is a scattering of some of the outstanding efforts as girls basketball kicked off in South Dakota.
One of the top opening night performances was turned in by all-state guard Marie Malloy who scored 31 points with six rebounds to lead #2 A Parkston to a 59-48 victory over #2 B Freeman on the road. Erica Herrold added 15 points. Freeman was led by Carly Vecher with 16 while Dina Soulek had 13 and all-state guard Paige Herrboldt added 11.
While Malloy was fantastic, Castlewood's Kelsey Little was a dominating force in a win. She had a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds as well as four steals to lead Castlewood to a 59-38 victory over Lake Preston.
Class B #1 Centerville upended Newcastle, Neb., 45-25, as Samantha Blake scored 13 points, had seven boards and four steals. Centerville's all-state guard Kieran O'Malley had 10 points.
Haley Hinseth had 15 points and 12 boards to help Irene/Wakonda to a 43-23 decision over Bridgewater/Emery.
#3 Class A Wagner, packed by 15 points from all-state guard Devon Brecke, upended Winner, 66-42.
Tia Hemiller and Savannah Gravatt both tallied 18 points to lead Watertown to a 64-40 win over Brookings in AA basketball. Watertown led by 41-17 at half. Hemiller added seven rebounds.
Cassidy Gebhart scored 22 points and Megan Krogman had 16 points and nine rebounds with seven steals to lead Elkton-Lake Benton, ranked #5 in Class A, to a 67-46 season opening win over Deuel.
Brooke Relf had 24 points and seven rebounds along with seven steals to lead Flandreau to a 49-28 win over Chester Area.
BreAnna Olson had 21 points and Taylor Stratton 19 to pace Oldham-Ramona-Rutland to a 63-29 win over Canistota.
Whitney Hutchinson had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead South Central past Lyman, 57-48.
Perhaps the best game of opening night was Canton's 62-59 win over the Flandreau Indian School. Atlanta Lundstrom scored the final three points of the game to lead the C-Hawks to the win. She had 15 points and eight rebounds while Heather Willett provided 11 points, 12 rebounds and six steals.
