A 7,000 square foot traveling exhibit is coming to the Washington Pavilion Kirby Science Center. The Nature Unleashed exhibit opens January 28th and will feature displays Midwesterners will find very relatable.
"The science center is very excited to bring this exhibition onto the third floor of the science center, so currently it's closed to the public," said the Center's Director, Erica Lacey.
The Chicago Field Museum developed the traveling exhibit. Patrons will be able to experience volcanoes, earthquakes, and tornados.
"They will be able to create their own volcano on a screen in front of them, create their own earthquake by stomping on the ground, and be able to experience a tornado around them," said Lacey.
KSFY's old news set will also be on display.
"We're bringing new life to it," said Lacey. "Our patrons will be able to operate cameras, the switchboard, and actually produce a newscast."
Whether it's touring the weather set or feeling tornadic wind surround you, the science center wants its patrons to immerse themselves in the exhibit.
"If you look outside today the weather is drastically different than yesterday, and it gives you an opportunity to dive into that and understand more about why weather is what it is."
The Washington Pavilion is extending its hours for the Nature Unleashed exhibit. Beginning January 30th the Pavilion's doors will be open on Mondays. Admission will be free on Fridays in February from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
