For the first time in eight years tonight, the SDSU and USD men's basketball teams will go head to head up in Brookings.
And while much has changed since then, including a move to division I and their entrance into the Summit League, both squads return two constants. Those being longtime coaches Dave Boots and Scott Nagy. Who, despite the renewed rivalry, have great respect for what the other has done to get their program to this point.
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for what Scott has done," 24th year coach Dave Boots said. "It was not easy but he hung with it and got them to where they are now."
"He has won a lot of games and we have gone against each other a ton," 17th year coach Scott Nagy said. "We have a lot of respect for each other and we don't feel about each other like the fans might in this rivalry. We really respect each other."
While both sides have tried to downplay this day as another Summit game, it's hard for all involved not to get caught up in the rekindling of an old fame.
"It is going to be very exciting, to be up there and have a lot of people supporting us," USD senior Louie Krogman said.
"I have been to a lot of games growing up," SDSU sophomore Chad White added. "I know this one is important and it adds a little bit of pressure. But it should be a lot of fun."
In the 115-yard rivalry, both sides have traded blows. With the Coyotes taking three of the last four at the division II level. However, in 2012 it is SDSU who stands atop the Summit standings. And is the heavy favorite tonight at Frost Arena.
"This is first time we are in it, should be a learning experience," SDSU junior Nate Wolters said. "The atmosphere will be great."
"We are going up there wanting to win, play well and show we are from the 605," USD senior Charlie Westbrook added.
The forecast in South Dakota calls for freezing temperatures tonight but inside on the hardwood, things are just starting to heat up.
