Janklow and McGovern shared a bond

Posted: Updated:

Great presence, passionate debaters, and instigators of change - qualities that both George McGovern and Bill Janklow, South Dakota's most effective political leaders, share.

"I think politics is the noblest profession. It's the place where you can do the most harm or the most good," said McGovern. "Bill was always on the side of doing something constructive."

McGovern and Janklow often watched each other from afar, but both always had the state's best interests near to their hearts.

"It's his dedication to this state. I think Bill Janklow was thoroughly committed to South Dakota and its welfare," said McGovern.

A couple of days ago, Janklow's son Russ received a call. McGovern would be at his Father's funeral and he wanted to secure a spot.

"Are you kidding? My Dad would want me to stand to make sure Senator McGovern had a seat," said Russ Janklow.

McGovern and Janklow weren't close friends, but a recent unplanned meeting at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester solidified their mutual admiration for one another.

"That morning was a very warm experience in my life," said McGovern. "I've never been embraced more enthusiastically by another political figure than I was that morning."
