Boys High School Basketball

AA

1 – Mitchell (11-1), 25

2 – SF O'Gorman (10-3), 18

3 – SF Lincoln (7-2), 14

4 – Pierre (9-2), 11, #5 last week

5 – Brookings (6-4), 5, unranked

Notes: #1 Mitchell retained the top spot by winning its 10th straight decision in a 46-44 win over Brandon Valley. Mitchell Head Coach Gary Munsen improved his all-time win-loss record to 632-238. Despite a loss to Brookings (67-57), O'Gorman remained #2. The loss to Brookings ended O'Gorman 47-game winning streak vs. South Dakota opponents. The Knights defeated SF Roosevelt after the Brookings setback. SF Lincoln stayed #3 after a 1-1 week. Previously #4 Watertown lost twice and fell from the rankings with Pierre moving up a spot with two wins, including a 23-point win over #5 Brookings. The Bobcats entered the rankings for the first time by beating #2 O'Gorman and #4 Watertown during a 2-1 week.

Notes: Class A had a little reshuffling this week. Previously #2 Dell Rapids defeated top-ranked St. Thomas More and took over the #1 spot, despite a 67-64 loss to Madison. Dakota Valley, previously #4, moved to #2 with a pair of wins. St. Thomas More fell from #1 to #3 with the 58-47 loss to Dell Rapids. #3 Garretson lost to Dell Rapids (53-42) and dropped to fifth. They will face 10-2 Flandreau on Jan. 24. Miller, which was fifth, dropped out of the top-five in a 1-1 week (51-48 loss to Crow Creek). They did receive votes. McCook Central/Montrose, which had been ranked earlier this season, moved to #4 with itsthree wins. They defeated Sioux Valley, 52-37; Flandreau, 74-47; and Madison, 62-59.  MC/M's Shayne Gottlobhad three straight double doubles with 17 and 10 vs. Madison; 29 points and 22 rebounds vs. Flandreau and 16 points and 21 boards vs. Sioux Valley.

B

Notes: #1 White River remained unbeaten and recorded a 63-43 win over previously #3 Viborg/Hurley at the Hanson Classic. White River also defeated Philip, scoring 90 points for the sixth time this season. Canistota had three wins and stayed #2. Rosholt continued its winning ways and jumped up to spots to #3. Unbeaten Faith cracked the top five with another double digit victory. They have won 10-of-11 games by 20 points or more and beat previously #4 Langford by 10 at the Hanson Classic. Viborg/Hurley, which was #3, fell two spots with a loss to White River. #4 Langford lost twice and dropped from the rankings.

Girls High School Basketball

AA

1 – Mitchell (11-1),25

2 – Aberdeen Central (9-2), 20

3 – SF Washington (9-2), 15

4 – Brandon Valley (9-3), 10, previously tied for #3

5 – SF Roosevelt (9-4), 3

Notes: Top-ranked Mitchell won for the sixth straight time while Aberdeen Central stayed at #2 with a win. SF Washington had two impressive wins and took control of the third spot, ahead of Brandon Valley, which lost to #1 Mitchell. BV, tied for third last week is now #4, after a 2-1 week, including victories over both Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens. The #5 spot is held by SF Roosevelt, barely. They had a 1-1 week, including a 52-41 decision over Sioux Falls O'Gorman, which was previously tied at #5. Yankton also received votes in a 1-1 week but not enough to bounce Roosevelt from the fifth spot. The Gazelles will host #1 Mitchell on Jan. 24 in the first of five straight home games with three of the top-five ranked teams.

A

2 – St. Thomas More (12-1), 20

Notes: Top-ranked Wagner continued to roll along with two wins while #2 St. Thomas More and #3 Beresford also had a pair of wins. Beresford guard Allison Klostergaard went over 1,000 points for her career.  Spearfish moved up a spot to #4 with three wins and will face #2 St. Thomas More on Jan. 24 in Rapid City. Sisseton continued to win and moved back into the top five, barely, ahead of previously #4 Elkton/Lake Benton, which received support. Elkton/Lake Benton had two wins but lost the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament finals to Class B #2 Estelline, 42-38. In its win against Oldham/Ramona/Rutland, E/LB guard Cassidy Gebhart scored 33 points.

B

1 – Herreid/Selby (11-0), 25

2 – Estelline (12-0), 20

3 – Summit (11-2), 15

4 – Warner (10-1), 10

5 – Centerville (10-3), 4

Notes: #1Herreid/Selby stayed unbeaten and will host the Yellowstone Trail Conference Tournament on Jan. 27-28. #2 Estelline also stayed perfect with three wins, including a 42-38 conquest of Elkton/Lake Benton, previously #4 in Class A. #3 Summit extended its winning streak to six games with three wins, including a 55-12 decision over Waverly/South Shore in the Eastern Coteau Conferencefinals. #4 Warner retained its spot with a win over Northwestern. Previously #5 Viborg/Hurleylost twice by a combined five points and fell from the top-five. They lost to Freeman (7-3), 52-49; and to Class A Baltic (9-2), 51-49. V/H has lost three games this season by a combined eight points and none by more than three points. Centerville, which was the preseason #1, moved back into the rankings at #5 with two wins. The Tornadoes host Viborg/Hurley on Jan. 25. Sully Buttes (10-2)won twice and received support in the rankings.
