PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota drivers won't get points for speeding tickets now that a bill on traffic violations has failed to pass the House.
The bill could have put back points for speeding tickets, a penalty that has been removed since 1986.
Lawmakers argue the points attributed to the miles-per-hour range over the speed limit are arbitrary. The bill specifies, for instance, that driving six to 15 miles per hour over the limit would get one point. Speeding in a school or construction zone would get three.
Rep. Betty Olson says she's against it.
She says, "State fines are punishment enough. We don't need to put any more regulations on the people of South Dakota."
The bill failed 30-39.
Last week, the transportation committee passed it 11-2.
