Boys High School Basketball

AA

1 – Mitchell (12-1), 25

2 – SF O'Gorman (11-3), 20

3 – SF Lincoln (8-2), 15

4 – Brookings (9-4), 9, #5 last week

5 – SF Roosevelt (8-4), 3, unranked

Notes: Mitchell remained #1 as the Kernels extended its winning streak to 11 games and moved Gary Munsen's all-time record to 633-238. The Kernels held onto the top spot for the fourth straight week. O'Gorman stayed #2 and Lincoln remained at #3. Brookings, which had three wins and moved up a spot, extended its winning streak to five games. SF Roosevelt won two close games, each by two points, and passed Pierre, which fell from #4 out of the rankings following a loss to Class A Spearfish on the road.

Notes: Dell Rapids and St. Thomas More remained in the top two spots with wins. The Quarriers held onto the top spot for the second straight week. #2 Dakota Valley dropped out of the top five after a 1-1 week, including a 75-61 loss to #4 Sioux Falls Christian, which moved back into the top five at #4. SFC has won seven of eight games with its only loss a 61-58 decision to #1 Dell Rapids, which they also defeated 62-5 early this year. McCook Central/Montrose extended its winning streak to four games and moved up to #3 while previously unranked Flandreau took the fifth spot. Both Winner, which had a 53-46 loss to STM, and Garretson, which lost a heart-breaking one-point decision (57-56) to Flandreau, received support this week. One of the key games of the week will be when #3 MC/M travels to Garretson on Feb. 3.  

B

3 – Rosholt (13-0), 15

4 – Faith (13-0), 10

Notes: Class B Boys is the only class in either boys or girls bb with more than one unbeaten team – five. In fact, four of the top five teams in the rankings remain undefeated.In addition, unranked Oelrichs improved to 11-0 and received support in this week's rankings but not enough to jump into the top five. All five ranked teams, led by #1 White River, held onto their positions this week. White River, which has been ranked #1 all season, owns a 994 to 501 points differential with opponents and have scored 90 points six times. WR has defeated every opponent by at least 11 (McLaughlin, 60-49). Outside that win, they have won by at least 20 points. They have six wins by 43 or more points. #2 Canistota had an impressive 56-32 win over Hanson and host #5 Viborg/Hurley on Jan. 31. Faith remained unbeaten at #4 with a 75-64 win over previously unbeaten Dupree. Like White River, they have defeated all their opponents by double digits.

Girls High School Basketball Rankings

AA

1 – Mitchell (12-1),25

2 – Aberdeen Central (11-2), 20

3 – SF Washington (11-2), 15

4 – Brandon Valley (9-4), 10

5 – Yankton (8-5), 5

Notes: #1 Mitchell, which has held the top spot for the third straight week, had wins over #4 Brandon Valley and new #5 Yankton in extending its winning streak to eight games. Aberdeen Central continued to win and hung onto the #2 spot while Sioux Falls Washington increased its winning streak to five games and remained at #3. They have a key in-city battle at SF O'Gorman on Feb. 2. Brandon Valley had a 1-1 week and remained #4. Standout Heidi Hoff, who has a state-best 22.4 points per game, tied a school record with 11 assists in a win over Huron. Yankton, which lost to #1 Mitchell, had a win over SF O'Gorman and moved into the top five. Yankton and BV will play on Feb. 2 in Yankton.

A

Notes: Wagner, which is the only unbeaten girls team regardless of class, continued to win and remained at the top of the A rankings. Wagner has been ranked #1 for three straight weeks. St. Thomas More defeated previously #4 Spearfish and was 2-0 for the week as they stayed in the #2 spot. Sisseton extended its winning streak to four games and moved up to #3. Previously unranked Aberdeen Roncalli extended its winning streak to six games with a 61-50 win over previously #4 B Warner (ending Warner's 10-game winning streak) in a 2-0 week. Warner has a big game on Jan. 31 when they host 10-2 Miller. Beresford lost to Dell Rapids and fell two spots to #5 after a 1-1 week. On the strength of a win over Beresford, Dell Rapids received support in the poll as did Elkton/Lake Benton. Beresford has a key rivalry game with Vermillion (11-2) on the road on Jan. 31.

B

1 – Summit (14-2), 25, #3 previously

2 – Herreid/Selby (13-1), 16, #1 last week

3 – Estelline (13-1), 12, #2 last week

4 – Centerville (11-3), 11, #5 last week

5 – Eureka (10-1), 8, unranked

Notes: Class B had a big shakeup this week as the previously ranked #1 and #2 squads both lost. Summit, which was ranked #3, moved to the top spot with three wins, including a 50-36 decision over Estelline, which fell from #2 to #3. Summit, the defending champions, extended its winning streak to nine games.Herreid/Selby, which had been #1 since Dec. 19, lost for the first time, a 47-34 decision to Eureka/Bowdle, which moved into the rankings at #5 for the first time. Estelline was 1-1 and fell a spot to #3. They will play host to Class A Elkton/Lake Benton on Feb. 3 in a rematch won earlier by Estelline, 42-38. Warner, last week's #4, lost to new Class A #4 Aberdeen Roncalli and fell from the rankings after its 10-game winning streak was snapped. Warner received support in the poll as did Hanson, which has won nine straight. Centerville moved up a spot with two quality wins over Kimball/White Lake and Viborg/Hurley, a teams in the rankings just two weeks ago. In their win against K/WL, Kieran O'Malley had 33 points and now has over 1,600 career points.  

Overall notes: All three #1 teams in the KSFY/KWSN boys rankings, Mitchell in AA, Dell Rapids in A and White River in B were preseason picks as the top squads in their respective classes. However, White River is the only one of the three teams to hold the spot all season. None of the KSFY/KWSN girls preseason picks are currently #1, but are all in the top five of their respective classes (Brandon Valley, currently #4 in AA; St. Thomas More, #2 in A, and Centerville, now #4 in B).
