SDSU's Leader in the Pool

Posted: Updated:

(Brookings)  South Dakota State swim coach Brad Erickson has spent the past 36 years in the water or behind the whistle for the jackrabbits men's and women's programs.

Brad Erickson "I enjoy coming to work everyday... If I didn't, I would still be here but I love to be doing what I am doing."

The Arlington, South Dakota native grew up rooting for SDSU, was the first Jackrabbit to swim in the Division II Championships,  and in 2002 receieved the Ralph Ginn award for coaching excellence.  A fitting tale for a man who was believed he was destined to end up in Brookings.

Erickson "So since sixth or seventh grade, I always thought I would end up here, it is kind of like fate."

For the coach who has spanned three decades, he says he's seen a lot of changes.

Erickson  "The biggest change would have to be the facilities, talent, and SDSU's move to Division I."

And while the transitions have been hard, Erickson says he always enjoyed playing the underdog.

Erickson "I would say our first championship in the 1970's when we were underdogs was a favorite memory."

Of course spenting three decades in one place does give you some unique opportunities.

Erickson "I think it is really cool to coach these kids and their parents too, I have no plans on retiring in the near future, I am loving what I am doing and we are in a great place right now."

Maybe he'll even get to coach grandkids.  In Brookings, Dylan Scott KSFY Sports.
