"I want them to see what the Democratic party stands for at its best. Each chapter is a different problem that faces the country," George McGovern said.
Problems like unemployment, immigration and the need for education support are all being talked about in former South Dakota Senator George McGovern's newly released book.
McGovern's latest book, What It Means to Be a Democrat was released in November 2011.
He made a stop at Barnes and Noble in Sioux Falls Friday. He's starting up his book tour that was canceled because of his health.
KSFY talked to McGovern about how he's feeling, his view on the Republican presidential field and who he thinks will win the Republican nomination.
He might be a former South Dakota senator but George McGovern is no stranger to the current state of politics.
Before his book signing Friday night, KSFY talked with him about the Republican presidential candidates.
"They're banging each other harder than you'd originally expect in the general election," McGovern said.
And because of they're bashing one another and President Obama, McGovern says it's hard to know what they stand for.
"That's my major critique and I don't see enough proposals that are carefully thought out," McGovern said.
And when it comes to the Republican nomination, he has an idea about who's going to take it.
"It looks like the former governor of Massachusetts is going to be the nomination but it's still too early to count the others out but I think he's getting stronger," McGovern said.
McGovern talked about his support for President Obama and how he'll support his re-election.
But he wants Obama to talk more about issues the country is facing like unemployment.
"We're in a serious depression and have been for four to five years and I'd like to see a strong position taken against unemployment and I don't think we should have million of people sitting on the sidelines doing nothing," McGovern said.
And many people have been wondering about his health lately.
In early December, he fell outside Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. He hit his head and was knocked unconscious. He spent some time in the hospital for the fall.
And before that he was hospitalized for exhaustion.
"I feel 100% now. I don't know if any of us are 100%, we've always got some little thing but I feel as good as I have in the past and I'll be around yet for a while," McGovern said.
He is headed for Florida this weekend and will be back in Sioux Falls in March.
McGovern had a good turnout with his book signing as more than 100 people were there to see him and get their book signed.
