Augustana hoops split at Minnesota State

Men's Recap

Augustana rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit and picked up a 70-64 win over Minnesota State Friday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball.

Augustana improves to 13-7 (10-6 NSIC), while MSU falls to 7-13 (6-10 NSIC).

Cody Schilling scored a game-high 23 points for the Vikings, which beat the Mavericks for the second time this season.  Leif Nomeland added 16, Cameron McCaffrey had 14 and Alex Richter netted 11.

The also Vikings received a seven-rebound performance from Brennan Olson.

MSU was led by Zach Romashko's 21 points.

The Mavericks' largest lead was a 16-point difference with 2:32 left in the first half.  MSU led 35-24 at the break.

The Vikings shot 50 percent in the final 20 minutes and drilled five 3-pointers.

Romasko's 13 first-half points keyed the sizable Maverick lead in the first half.  He went 5 of 6 from the field, helping his team shoot 50 percent in the opening frame.

Sparked by a three-point play from Schilling, the Vikings opened the second half on a 14-2 run that put them ahead 38-37 with 14:28 to play.  Schilling had 10 point during the span.

Richter drilled a trey with 10 minutes left for a 50-44 Viking lead, but MSU got a 3-pointer of its own with four minutes to go to grab a 54-52 advantage.

Nomeland answered with another 3-pointer 30 seconds later, and the Vikings stretched their lead to eight points with 37 ticks remaining.

Schilling and McCaffrey collaborated for six free throws in the final 40 seconds to keep the lingering Mavericks away.

The Vikings committed just eight turnovers in the win, which was their third straight.

Schilling--who logged three steals--spearheaded a solid Viking defense that made nine swipes on the evening.  The Mavericks finished with 13 turnovers; Augustana turned those mistakes into 13 points.

Women's Recap

No. 25 Augustana rallied from a 15-point deficit and forced overtime on Minnesota State, but the effort fell short as the Mavericks snapped the Vikings' 10-game win streak with a 98-95 overtime victory Friday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball.

Augustana, who hadn't lost a game since Dec. 17, drops to 16-4 (13-3 NSIC). MSU improves to 14-6 (10-6 NSIC).

Molly Hayes led both teams with a career- and game- high 33 points on 11 of 18 shooting. She drilled five 3-pointers in the game.

Alex Feeney was one board shy of a double-double, recording nine rebounds and 11 points.

Six Mavericks were in double-figure scoring and Jennie Noreen led the way with 20 points.

Faith Tinklenberg put the Vikings on the scoreboard at 19:23 and MSU then held the Vikings scoreless for more than two minutes before Tinklenberg dropped in another bucket to trail 12-4 at the 16 minute, 50 second mark.

The Mavericks continued to extend their lead throughout the first-half and held a 46-31 advantage with 3:41 remaining. The 15-point lead was MSU's largest of the evening. 

Augustana used a 6-0 run in those final minutes to cut its deficit to 46-37 at half time.

The Mavericks didn't allow the Vikings to make a single 3-point shot in the opening 20 minutes and MSU limited Augustana to 35.0 percent (14-40) shooting from the floor. 

MSU moved its lead to 57-46 with just more than 16 minutes left in the game before Augustana used a 10-3 run to cut the Mavericks' advantage to 61-56 at 11:28. Hayes netted seven points for the Vikings in their scoring burst.

Over the next five minutes MSU build another double-digit lead, but Emily Bose connected on four free-throws during a 7-2 run that left the Vikings trailing just 77-72 with 4:44 remaining.

Hayes sunk a three-pointer at 1:48 that was immediately followed by another 3-point bucket from Feeney that brought the Vikings within one point of MSU, 82-81. 

With nine seconds remaining, Hayes recorded a layup to keep the Vikings down only 86-85. She then hit a free-throw to knot the score and send the game into overtime.

Emily Schulte made two-free throws to allow Augustana to take its first lead of the game three seconds into overtime.

The Mavericks made a 3-pointer at 4:15 to take an 89-88 lead and kept it until Hayes knotted the score 95-95 with 1 minute, 40 seconds remaining.

MSU made three free throws for its 98-95 victory.
