Free tax preparation services start in Sioux Falls

Posted: Updated:

As tax season gets underway, many people are taking advantage of special services that help citizens file for free.

The Volunteer Tax Assistance, or VITA, program started at the Siouxland Main Library location in Sioux Falls today.

VITA is a free tax service that helps people file their taxes who have an income under $50,000.

Laurie Burtis said, "It means a lot. It helps out because they do it for free."

The service will be offered every Saturday of February from 10:00 to 3:00 PM, and Monday evenings from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

The number of people they can help each session varies based on the number of volunteers, but they average 50 clients a session. Volunteers come from the community, as well as USF and Augustana College.

Another free tax preparation service started at Active Generations on Saturday as well.

AARP is helping low to moderate income earners with their tax forms by appointment. They are available for seniors on weekdays from 9 AM to 4 PM and Saturdays from 9:00 till noon. They will be available through April 15th.

Last year across South Dakota AARP helped with more than 10,000 returns.
