PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota lawmakers will soon decide the fate of a controversial state flag proposal. A House panel will vote on a bill sponsored by more than 80 lawmakers that would redesign South Dakota's flag with a colorful and geometric pattern.

Rep. Bernie Hunhoff, a Yankton Democrat, says it's time to fly a design that differs from the state's seal. He hopes that a new state flag would unite South Dakota under a symbol without wording, as the Lone Star flag does for Texas. Spearfish artist Dick Termes created the design, which features a Native American medicine wheel surrounded by sunshine rays atop a sky-blue background.

The design has sparked controversy as some people argue the state seal is sufficient. The House State Affairs committee will weigh the bill Monday.
