Boys High School Basketball

AA

Notes: In a topsy-turvy Class AA field, SF O'Gorman has moved into the top spot after wins over Sioux City North and previously #5 SF Roosevelt, which had two losses and dropped out of the rankings. The Knights own a four-game winning streak and have won 51 of its last 52 vs. in-state opponents. Moving up to #2 is SF Lincoln, which had three wins, including victories over Watertown and SF Roosevelt. Mitchell, which had a 1-1 week, dropped to #3 after four weeks ranked#1. The Kernels had an 11-game winning streak snapped by Pierre (54-51), which defeated Mitchell for the second time and moved back into the rankings at #4. Brookings dropped to #5 after a lost to Huron. Watertown, which interestingly has defeated Pierre twice, again received votes.

A

Notes: Dell Rapids retained the top spot for the third straight week as the Quarriers extended its winning streak to four games but face a big challenge in 12-3 Dakota Valley on Feb. 10. STM had an impressive week with three victories, including a 53-43 win over Class AA Sioux Falls Washington as sharpshooter Skye Warwick had 23 points.  McCook Central/Montrose ran its winning streak to seven games with three wins. Sioux Falls Christian remained at #4 and now has won five straight and nine of 10 games. They also have a battle on Feb. 6 against Madison in Sioux Falls. Flandreau extended its winning streak to five with three victories this week.

B

1 – White River (14-0), 25

2 – Rosholt (15-0), 15, previously #3

3 – Faith (16-0), 10, previously #4

4 – Viborg /Hurley (14-2), 4

5 – Canistota (13-2), 5, previously #2

Notes: #1 White River continued to roll and is the only team in either the boys or girls rankings to retain the top spot all season. White River has won every game by at least 11 points. Other than a 60-49 win over McLaughlin, White River has defeated all opponents by 20 points or more and own eight wins of 37 points or more. #2 Canistota had a tough week, falling twice after opening the season with 13 straight wins. They dropped a 58-37 decision to #5 Viborg/Hurley and also lost to Ellsworth, Minn. (13-7). With Canistota falling, Rosholt continued to win and moved up to #2. Like Rosholt, Faith stayed unbeaten with three wins, including a second win over a 14-2 Dupree team. They have won every game this season by double digits. Viborg/Hurley moved up a spot to #4 after extending its winning streak to four straight. They defeated #2 Canistota as well as Freeman Academy and Class A Aberdeen Roncalli.

Girls High School Basketball

AA

Notes: #1 Mitchell (16-1) retained the top spot for a fourth straight week after three wins. Since suffering its only loss of the season on Jan. 2 to SF Lincoln, Wes Morgan's Kernels have ripped off 11 straight wins. Aberdeen Central fell from #2 to #4 after losing to Watertown. SF Washington, which has a six-game winning streak, moved up to #2 after a win over O'Gorman. Yankton jumped up two spots after defeating current #5 and previously #4 Brandon Valley. Yankton will host #4 Aberdeen Central on Feb. 10. Brandon Valley fell to #4 to #5. Watertown had wins over SF Lincoln and previously #2 Aberdeen Central and was just out of the top five.

A

Notes: #1 Wagner (17-0) continued to win with two straight wins. In a verdict over McCook Central/Montrose, all-state performer Devon Brecke had 31 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. The Red Raiders, ranked #1 for the fourth straight week, are the only unbeaten girls team in SD girls prep hoops. St. Thomas More had a 1-1 week, losing to Chadron (Neb.), 57-55). STM has only one loss to a SD team, top-ranked Wagner on Jan. 14 in Mitchell. After the top two, the Class A rankings had changes, including previously unranked Elkton/Lake Benton moving up to #3 after avenging an earlier loss to Class B #5 Estelline, 44-42. Unranked Tri-Valley moved into the rankings for the first time at #4. They have won six straight and 8-of-9 as they recorded wins over 11-3 West Central and 11-4 Dell Rapids. Sisseton fell from #3 to #5, after a 51-48 loss to Aberdeen Roncalli, which received votes this week but fell out of the rankings. Also earning votes was 13-2 Miller, which had an overtime win against Aberdeen Roncalli. Miller has six straight wins. Previously #5 Beresford (12-3) had a 1-1 week and dropped from the rankings.

B

1 – Summit (15-2), 25

2 – Herreid/Selby (14-1), 20

3 – Centerville (14-3), 15, previously #4

4 – Eureka/Bowdle (12-1), 8, previously #5

5 – Estelline (13-2), 6, previously #3

Notes: #1 Summit (15-2), the defending champions, defeated Ipswich, 87-30, to extend its winning streak to 10 games since a Dec. 27 loss to Class A #5 Sisseton. It is the second straight week, Summit has been #1. Herreid/Selby won its only game and stayed at #2. They play a pair of outstanding but unranked foes on the road this week. They are at Faith (13-2), which has six straight wins,on Feb. 6 and Sully Buttes (13-2) on Feb. 9. #3 Estelline lost to Class A #3 Elkton/Lake Benton, 44-42, and dropped to #5. Previously #4 Centerville won its sixth straight game and moved up to #3. They have 10 wins in the past 11 games. In a win over Parker, Centerville's Kieran O'Malley had a Class B best (this year) 43 points and also had five assists, five steals and four rebounds. Samantha Blake added 22 points and nine boards. #5 Eureka/Bowdle (12-1) extended its winning streak to eight games and moved up to #4. Warner, which has won 14-of-15 games, also received votes. In four wins this past week, they outscored opponents 151 to 89, holding all their opponents to 31 points or fewer. A couple of other teams did not win but should be watched. Castlewood has an eight-game winning streak and improved to 13-2 after three double digit wins. Sully Buttes is 13-2 and have a 10-game winning streak. Hanson moved to 14-3 with its 10th straight win. They also have won 13-of-14 games. Vermillion (13-2) defeated previously #5 Beresford by 17 and has won 7-of-8.Also, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (13-2) has won four straight and 8-of-9.
