If you live with chronic pain then you know it is no way to live. Nancy Naeve Brown met a gulf war vet from Madison who was first injured in the war and then again in 2006 and finally found relief at the American Pain Relief Institute in Yankton.

Peggy Friedrich from Madison gladly makes the drive to Yankton about every 6 months to get treatments at the American Pain Relief Institute on the campus of Avera Sacred Heart.  She first injured her neck while serving her country in the Navy in the Gulf War. Her second injury happened 6 years ago when she fell at work and hit the corner of a desk severely injuring her vertebrae right at the bra strap.

Peggy says, "It wraps around. It makes it so you don't want to eat, you just can't think, you aren't polite, you feel like a cranky old lady. It takes over your life."

For two years Peggy was consumed with pain until she came to see pain relief specialist Dr. William Cohen. At his clinic he uses pulse radiofrequency. He compares our nervous system to the cable modem connected to the TV or computer.

Dr. Cohen says, "There are lots of different messages that go through and those messages can be controlled electronically and with pulsed radiofrequency which is a non-destructive form of radiofrequency therapy we can intervene to modify how the nerve works so we can top pain without injuring the nerve. It would be like going in and dropping an atomic bomb in a city when you have a terrorist on the 75th floor of a building in one room. Why go in and destroy anything you when can make it better."

And after the treatment Peggy is instantly better, not completely free of pain, but so much more manageable.

Peggy says, "This gives you hope. It's really hard to explain because you come in on medication, significant medication, you don't get rest. It's with you day in and day out. You go from recliner to bed to chair because try to run away from the pain. After treatment the very same day the medicine controls the pain. You find yourself laughing and smiling and having hope again. Before you're like is this what life is going to be about, nothing but pain? It changes your life."

She went from a life with blinding chronic pain to a life filled with infinite possibilities, that's a pretty good endorsement for Dr. Cohen and his staff here at the American Pain Relief Institute who are delivering on their good name.
