South Dakota senior women's basketball player Amber Hegge has been named the Summit League Female Athlete of the Month for January, the league announced on Thursday. Hegge earned the honor for the second consecutive month.
Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) put together another outstanding month for the Coyote women, averaging 17.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.9 blocks and 1.2 steals per contest. She shot 50 percent from the field, 74 percent from the free-throw line and posted a 1.2 assist/turnover ratio. Hegge led the Coyote to a 5-3 mark, including four straight wins to close out the month, to help South Dakota jump from ninth place in the standings to third.
Hegge had 30 points and 12 rebounds in a home win over IUPUI on Jan. 23, and also had 24 points and seven rebounds at Oral Roberts, where the Coyotes edged the Golden Eagles, 60-57 on Jan. 30.
The senior forward leads the Coyotes in scoring (18.3 points per game), rebounding (8.6), steals (36), field-goal percentage (53.5) and is second on the team in assists (80) and blocks (47).
The Coyote women resume action at home Saturday against North Dakota State. Tipoff is at 5:05 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
