A 17-point outing from Cody Schilling keyed a 73-60 Augustana victory over Northern State Friday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball.
Augustana moves to 14-8 (11-7 NSIC), while NSU falls to 12-10 (8-10 NSIC).
Schilling's 17 points was a game high. He was one of four Vikings in double figures. Alex Richter poured in a career-high 15 points, Cameron McCaffrey netted 14 and Drae Murray had 11.
Alex Thomas' 16 points led the Wolves, who lost to Augustana at home in December.
The Vikings shot 55.2 percent (16 of 29) and drilled eight 3-pointers in the second half to pull away from NSU.
Augustana led by as many 23 points in the win.
It took the Vikings four minutes to score their first bucket--a Brennan Olson layup--and by then the Wolves had already dropped in seven points. The lead was NSU's biggest of the night; once it was gone, Augustana's advantage stuck for the remainder of the contest.
That Viking lead came with 4:22 left in the first half when McCaffrey converted a fast-break layup to put his team ahead 21-19. The basket was part of an 8-3 run by Augustana to close the half.
The Vikings led 27-22 at the break, getting 11 points in the first 20 minutes from Schilling.
It was a 23-0 run that started four minutes into the second half that essentially sunk the Wolves. The Vikings went wild from behind the arc, receiving a trio of 3-pointers each from Murray and Richter. Augustana led 56-33 following the outburst.
NSU worked the deficit down to 14 points four times in the final four minutes.
Reserve play proved big for the Vikings. Augustana's bench accounted for 25 points.
Olson led a strong Augustana rebounding performance. His seven boards were part of a 33-26 Viking advantage in the category.
Augustana's eight 3-pointers in the second frame were the most treys in a half by the Viking this season. They were unsuccessful on four tries in the opening half.
Women's Recap
Faith Tinklenberg scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help Augustana to a 72-61 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Northern State Friday evening.
Augustana improves to 18-4 (15-3 NSIC), while NSU falls to 13-11 (8-10 NSIC).
Shaunteva Ashley and Alex Feeney contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Augustana outstole NSU 11-3 and Emily Schulte led the way for the Vikings with four swipes. Lydia Nelson finished with three.
NSU's Mikayla Barondeau had a game-high 18-points and nine rebounds.
Nelson hit a layup at 13:29 to knot the score for the fourth time and her bucket also kicked off a 12-3 run that put Augustana ahead 24-17 at 9:23. Ashley netted six of the Vikings' points in their run.
At 6:55, Schulte recorded a layup to push Augustana's advantage to 28-20 and the Wolves used the next three and a half minutes to steal a 29-28 lead.
Tinklenberg then drilled a 3-pointer, which was followed by a NSU layup to tie the score 31-31 at the 2 minute, 41 second mark.
With six seconds left in the first half, Feeney nailed a 3-pointer to cap off an 8-2 run that allowed Augustana to hold a 39-33 advantage at the buzzer.
The Vikings held an 18-0 advantage in fast break points in the opening 20 minutes and scored 12 of their points off NSU's turnovers.
Augustana stretched its lead to 44-33 to open the second half, but the Wolves cut the Vikings' advantage to 45-43 with 14:07 left of play.
The Vikings managed to keep their lead alive and at 5:31 Schulte knocked the ball out of NSU's hands and brought it to the basket to bring the score to 61-49. The 12-point advantage was Augustana's largest of the evening.
Augustana kept its momentum strong in the final minutes, only allowing the Wolves to come within eight points of its lead.
NSU collected 21 boards in the first half and outrebounded the Vikings 32-25.
Augustana and NSU shot almost identical as the Vikings connected at a 44.2 percent clip from the field (23 of 52) and the Wolves shot 42.3 percent (22 of 52) from the floor.
