PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota House panel says if the new federal health care law is thrown out, the state should start over with its own health care regulations.
South Dakota law now says the state handles its own health insurance regulations as long as they comply with the federal law.
Rapid City Republican Rep. Brian Gosch wants to repeal that provision.
He says it would allow South Dakota to "start fresh" on health care regulation while state officials wait for a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the federal law.
Opponents of the bill say it doesn't put enough emphasis on providing health care for the uninsured.
The South Dakota House's State Affairs Committee voted 8-4 Monday to support the measure. Now it goes to the House floor for a vote.
