A third Walmart? Neighbors weigh in on the debate

Posted: Updated:

For those who live on the Southside of Sioux Falls, Walmart could be coming to your neighborhood. The super chain is considering its third location in the city, this one near the intersection of 69th Street and Cliff Avenue.

But what do the neighbors think? It was pretty much a toss up between those for and against a potential third location.

So KSFY went to a neighborhood near the Eastside Walmart to speak with people who went through the same thing when that store was proposed.

A little over a decade ago the Eastside Walmart was just a vacant lot. When it's construction was announced, the next door neighbors weren't too thrilled.

"We were concerned about the lighting issue and if our street would be open and if there would be traffic through." Carol Streyle said.

Many homeowners planted more trees and plants to block what they thought would be an eye-sore. But many admit a Walmart in their backyard is not as bad as they originally thought.

"If anything it's made the traffic on 10th Street greater but seems to be ok, so yeah the concerns have not been a real problem and it's been nice having them close-by." Streyle said.

Walmart is now turning it's eyes to the South, to another vacant lot this one at 69th Street and Cliff Avenue. Neighbors here are glad to see more shopping options could be coming their way.

"It's certainly going to be handy for me to pick up the odds and ends I currently have to go across town to one of the other Walmart's, so from that point I guess it's pretty good." Gib Ceretto said

While others have the complete opposite reaction.

"Oh no! More traffic behind the house!" Darcy Huntington said.

Huntington says the noise of traffic is already bad enough. She thinks it will only get worse with more people coming to the proposed shopping center.

"I figured it was going to go commercial but I was surprised when they said Walmart because we didn't receive any letters." Huntington said.

Huntington says only homes and businesses within 400 feet of the proposed site were notified by the company. Being on the opposite side of Cliff Avenue, she was overlooked.

Like many of her neighbors Huntington says she will definitely be at Thursday's meeting to see what the store has planned.

If a third Walmart is constructed here, she admits it will get her business, she'll just have to live with more people coming to her neighborhood.

"You know that's progress and you just have to go with the flow." Huntington said.

For those who would like to attend the Walmart information meeting, it is Thursday night at 6:30 at CJ Callaways.
