If you have young children, listen up. You may recognize the common illness: Respiratory Syncytial Virus or better known as RSV. It's a growing concern among doctor's and parents who are seeing more and more cases this year.
RSV has grown to become a big concern for the woman who lives inside one Sioux Falls home because she also runs an in-home daycare. She says it's the toughest year of the virus she's seen in 32 years.
"It has seemed to hit the little kids harder and it lasts longer. Before, they could be out of daycare only 4 days," Bernice Miller said.
Bernice said normally those symptoms would be gone pretty quick and kids are back to play but not this time around.
"This year, I see a minimum of 8 days at least with fever coming and going. The cough just persists much longer than I've ever seen it," Bernice said.
And that's an even bigger concern. Not to mention, doctors say the virus is extremely contagious around the little ones. Bernice says the coughs and sniffles just won't stop.
"There's days you feel like you're running an infirmary. I've had some days where 4 kids had the same cough or sending two home with a fever," Bernice said.
What amazes Bernice is how quickly symptoms of RSV will start.
"A parent may say their child is well in the morning, but by noon, they'll be running a fever," she said.
Though she predicts three weeks until RSV cases go away, she hopes it will be much sooner.
