A drunk cheerleader at practice and a pair of friends wondering what to do. It's part of the storyline of "Who Says I Can't Drink", an upcoming performance at the Washington Pavilion.
"Our plays are about bringing issues to the open that are hard to talk about and this can be a very hard thing to talk about," said RoseAnn Hofland, the Pavilion's Community Learning Center Director.
Norah Lueth is an eighteen-year-old at Brandon Valley. She's been action since she was in third grade. She says this play is particularly relevant.
"I know a lot of kids at my school who can relate to stuff like that. Underage drinking is a really big problem in Sioux Falls," said Lueth.
"Who Says I Can't Drink" is intended for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders and their parents.
"I think it really puts them on the spot and says you need to think about what you're doing. You need to think about the consequences of this not just for your teenager but for yourself," said Shannon Wright Barnes an actor with Dakota Academy of Performing Arts.
Following the play, the teens and parents will be broken up into two groups to discuss what they saw.
"That is going to be facilitated by multiple organizations in town who deal with issues of prevention and who deal with counseling and addiction," said Hofland.
"Who Says I Can't Drink" will be performed on March 8th and April 26th. For more information click on the Dakota Academy of Performing Arts link.
