Our "Scholar of the Week" carries a 3.98 grade point average at James Valley Christian High School in Huron.
Her name is Sarah Wedel and she is involved with the National Honor Society, student council and Girls State as well as her accomplishments in sports and music.
Her academic record is impressive, as you will hear from her science teacher. It's time to meet Sarah Wedel.
Just try to keep up with James Valley Christian senior Sarah Wedel. In between music, choir and sports, she also leads Bible study and youth groups. And then there's her classes: calculus, accounting and anatomy...which she says is setting her up for success after college. "Specifically I want to major in journalism and business so accounting is helping me get introduction to them. Our school doesn't have specific journalism classes but we write a lot in English class which helps me a lot."
Sarah works hard which is reflected in her academic record for not only high school, but dating back to her elementary school days as well. This is what her science teacher Mark Knight told us. "From Kindergarten through 12th grade she's gotten A's except for one and that one was chemistry last year that I taught her."
Straight A's for virtually her entire academic career. Sarah says James Valley Christian is directly to credit for her success in the classroom...saying smaller class sizes have afforded her more teacher involvement and attention. But she says that smaller atmosphere has also helped her develop outside of the classroom. "Because it's so small they need kids to be involved in every activity there is so it's make me really well rounded being involved in so many different activities like music, sports, leadership opportunities."
For being named our "Scholar of the Week", Sarah will receive a $100 scholarship from Dakota Energy Cooperative, which is a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
