Sioux Falls Police say one man is in custody, Thursday, after a shooting outside a Sioux Falls school.
Police say it happened around midnight in the parking lot of Hayward Elementary School in west Sioux Falls. They say it started after a group of young people were arguing.
They say 21 year-old Carlos Duran-Garcia shot a 19 year-old man in the back from a car. Duran-Garcia faces several charges including aggravated assault. More could be pending and they are still looking for witnesses.
"It's so scary it's so close just right across the street," Rahim Ameti said.
Those who live nearby say they're in disbelief.
"We couldn't really believe it. We didn't go out after that we were inside for the whole night," Rahim said.
But some say this activity doesn't surprise them.
"It seems like the neighborhood has brought in different types of families. It's gotten a little rough with kids in school and I think it's getting worse with the kids and violence around here," Joe Pulliam said.
However, this situation is still a concern.
"It kinda shocked me it happened so close to my house since I have little relatives running around all the time. It makes me want to be on alert all the time," Chance Lemhuis said.
And being so close to Hayward Elementary School...
"The kids around here, they're out all hours of the day. Who's to say it's not going to happen during the day to put the kids in jeopardy," Pulliam said.
The victim was taken to the hospital and later released with non-life threatening injuries. Police say there is no concern to the public.
THE SHOOTING WAS A FIRST FOR MANY OF THE NEGHBORS -- AND THEY HOPE IT'S THE LAST.
<04:18:15 I hope it doesn't happen again around here for the safety of everyone," Pulliam said. 04:18:21 >
