Moody County road reopens, investigation continues

Posted: Updated:

After more than six hours, a stretch of road in rural Moody County is back open Thursday night after investigators piece together a shooting that involved a deputy.

The Moody County State's Attorney says the deputy was in the area where two cars had stopped. One of the drivers got out of the car holding a gun in hand. Officials aren't releasing the details after that but say the driver was shot.

The departments aren't saying who was shot but we do know that person was taken to the hospital. No word on injuries.

Here's what KSFY saw on the scene Thursday afternoon.

A portion of 223rd Street between 474th and 475th Avenue in rural Moody County was blocked off for more than six hours. This area is two miles east of the Ward exit off Interstate 29.

If you traveled that way you could clearly see there was no way through 223rd Street as large road closed signs were set up.

It was all so investigators could find out more information about a shooting that happened around noon Thursday involving a Moody County Sheriff's Deputy and a driver who was holding a gun.

A handful of squad cars and unmarked cars sat in front of a yellow house. An investigator tells KSFY that house has nothing to do with this investigation.

KSFY noticed Flandreau Police, Moody County Sheriff's Department and Division of Criminal Investigation agents on the scene.

Investigators looked in ditches and inspected other parts of the area.

Around 5:45 p.m., KSFY noticed a black pickup truck being loaded on a flatbed.

As the truck was being hauled away from the scene we got a good look at it. It was a black Nissan Titan truck. The flatbed driver was headed towards town. The truck was dirty but it looked like it had South Dakota license plates. As of Thursday night we don't know who that truck belongs to.

Once the investigation is finished a report will made. That will be looked at by the Attorney General and the Moody County Sheriff's Office to see if the shooting was justified.

The release of that report could take up to 30 days.
