(Clear Lake) "It's the only sport I've ever done." Safe to say, Deuel's Sam Wiekamp chose the right sport. She's won a state record 16 individual state titles in gymnastics. That number could go much higher since she's only a junior.
Lynn Gundmundson/Deuel Head Coach "She works so hard, she'll keep working until she masters a skill. That's what makes her so successful.
Sam Wiekamp/Deuel Jr. "I don't go in with high expections. Because if you do, and there's disappointment, that's not cool."
Wiekamp gets her toughest competition in practice. Freshman Meaghan Sievers has two individual state titles of her own. A year ago, the two had the highest all-around scores ever at the state meet.
Meaghan Sievers/Deuel Fr. "There's a rivalry there, but's it's a teammate rivalry. We want each other to do well."
Gundmundson "They push each other and their teammates. When you have two gymnasts that score 37 or 38 on the all-around almost every meet. Other teams can't match that, and that's been the key to our success."
One of the main goals is to win that team title. Last year Deuel snapped Madison's amazing run of 16 straight team championships giving the Cardinals their first ever team title in gymnastics.
Wiekamp "That was the most unbelieveable feeling. I can't explain it if you haven't felt something like that."
Sievers "When we beat them, we couldn't believe it. We've never experienced anything like that."
