Many questions remain in Moody County shooting

Posted: Updated:

First here is what we know from the Moody County State's Attorney. He says around noon on Thursday, two miles east of I-29 on 223rd Street in rural Moody County, a Moody County Deputy Sheriff arrived at a location where two vehicles had come to a stop. He says one driver stepped out of his vehicle with a pistol in his hand. He says at some point after that the driver was shot by the deputy and was taken by ambulance to be treated for his injuries. Investigators are not releasing the name of the man who was shot or how he is doing.

A portion of 223rd Street between 474th and 475th Avenue in rural Moody County was blocked off for more than six hours. This area is two miles east of the Ward exit off Interstate 29. It was reopened by Thursday night.

KSFY noticed Flandreau Police, the Moody County Sheriff's Department, and the Division of Criminal Investigation agents on the scene.

Investigators looked in ditches and inspected other parts of the area. Around 5:45 p.m., KSFY noticed a black pickup truck being loaded on a flatbed. As the truck was being hauled away from the scene we got a good look at it. It was a black Nissan Titan truck. The truck was dirty but it looked like it had South Dakota license plates. As of Friday morning we don't know who that truck belongs to.

Once the investigation is finished a report will made. The report will be looked at by the Attorney General and the Moody County Sheriff's Office to see if the shooting was justified. The release of that report could take up to 30 days.
