VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) - A University of South Dakota chemistry professor is helping NASA develop structures that will make it possible for people to live on the moon.
Ranjit Koodali is an associate professor of chemistry at the University of South Dakota. He has received a $200,000 grant from NASA to study the design of a multi-functional structural composite insulation system for lunar habitats
Koodali says the project will directly address NASA's goal of developing a sustained human presence on the moon and Mars.
The goal of the research includes developing and examining insulating nanomaterials. Koodali will also fabricate and test panels that are load-bearing and insulated.
