BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - The driver in a hit & run crash that killed a Brookings teenager has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
18 year-old Jose Hernandez pleaded guilty last month to vehicular homicide and a hit & run charge in the death last September 3 of 17 year-old John Bennett. Hernandez was sentenced this week.
Hernandez was accused of drinking and driving a sport utility vehicle that ran a red light and hit Bennett's car, killing him. Hernandez fled the scene but later surrendered to authorities in Austin, Texas.
Defense attorney Robert Fite said Hernandez was working in the United States to provide for his family in Mexico.
