The firm who runs the Sioux Falls Convention Center, Global Spectrum released their sales revenues for last year.
We tell you what this could mean for the new Sioux Falls Events Center.
More than 290 events were held at the Sioux Falls Convention Center in 2011. That caused sales revenue to go up $400,000 from the previous year.
We talked with marketing manager Elizabeth Colbert about the numbers.
"I think the numbers are really reflective of what the economy is doing. Businesses are coming back and spending money, going to events and conventions," Elizabeth Colbert said.
The management company Global Spectrum says this is the highest revenue year to date since taking over the facility in 2007. And that revenue benefits the city.
"People are coming to town. They're booking hotel rooms, spending money on gas and on dinner," Colbert said.
With a new Events Center set to be built to the southwest side of the current Convention Center and Arena, the rise in Convention Center revenue could have a positive start for the new facility.
"With the trends increasing and more meetings happening and more people attending more concerts those are all positive signs for the Events Center coming to Sioux Falls," Colbert said.
And with groundbreaking set for August 2012, the question remains, who will manage it?
Both Global Spectrum and SMG which is the firm that manages the Arena, are both looking to manage the new Events Center facility.
The city will start accepting proposals in the next few weeks. The deadline is set for the end of March. City officials believe other firms are expected to apply.
When a firm is eventually chosen, the firm will manage the new Events Center, the Convention Center, the Arena and the Orpheum Theater in downtown Sioux Falls.
