Three candidates running for councilor position

Posted: Updated:

Councilor Vernon Brown occupied the 'at-large' member seat for two full four-year terms.
That position is the highest of all eight positions because that person represents the city over individual districts.

This year, three people are campaigning for that seat... and two are no strangers to the Sioux Falls city council.

They're former councilor Kermit Staggers, another former Council Meber De Knudson and Cory Buttemeier.

The candidates in the running for this at-large seat bring their own ambitions and priorities to city government. One thing they all have in common is their drive to make Sioux Falls a better place to live.

Everything from age, experience to priorities separates these three candidates. I sat down with each of them to find out why they're choosing to run and what is high on their list of priorities.

De Knudson and Kermit Staggers each served two full 4-year terms while Cory Buttemeier calls himself fresh new blood, something he says this city council needs.

Things important to these candidates include everything from the events center spending to city's infrastructure and promoting the city on a national level, and that's just the beginning.

"Like most people that run for office, I'm concerned about having a better community and here in Sioux Falls we can make it a lot better," Kermit Staggers said.

"Not having experience in politics is a good thing. You need fresh blood, fresh ideas. I'm young, I'm energetic and I care," Cory Buttemeier said.

"I exemplify a positive leadership and I plan to work very hard if I am elected on April 10th to continue improving our city in every way that I can," De Knudson said.

There are three district positions also included in the election.

Polls will be open Tuesday April 10, 2012.
